How to make an audio file smaller

  1. Choose your file. Tap the box above, or drop your file on it. You can use an audio file or a video file.
  2. Pick a format. Choose MP3 if you are not sure. It plays everywhere.
  3. Pick a quality. Balanced is good for most people. Small is best for voice.
  4. Choose Mono or Stereo. Mono makes voice files about half the size.
  5. Press Start. Wait a moment, listen to your new file, then press Download file.

You can see the estimated new size before you start. Change the settings until the size is right for you.

The tool only shows formats that your browser can really make. So you will never get a broken file.

Which quality should I choose?

  • Small: for voice notes, lessons, talks and podcasts.
  • Balanced: our pick for most files. Good sound, small size.
  • High: for music you want to enjoy.
  • Best: for the cleanest sound. The file is bigger.

Why is this tool private and safe?

Most online audio tools ask you to upload your file to their server. Then you wait, and then you download it again. Your private sound sits on a computer you do not know.

Our tool is different. It uses tools that are already inside your browser, like the Web Audio API. Your phone or computer does all the work in its own memory. Nothing is sent to us. This is why it is safe for private voice notes, meetings, lessons and family recordings.

Take the sound out of a video

Do you have a video and need only the sound? Open your MP4, MOV or WebM video in the tool and save it as MP3. You get an audio file you can listen to anywhere. Do you want a smaller video instead? Use our free Offline Video Compressor & Converter.

Tips for the smallest file

  • For voice, use Mono and Small quality.
  • Do not choose WAV if you want a small file. WAV has no compression.
  • If your file is already a small MP3, making it smaller again can lower the sound quality. Check the estimated size first.
  • Long recordings (more than one hour) work better on a computer than on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is this audio compressor really free?

Yes. It is 100% free. There is no sign-up, no limit on how many files you make, and no watermark on your sound.

Do you upload my audio file?

No. Your file never leaves your phone or computer. The tool works inside your browser, using your own device memory. We cannot see, hear, or save your file.

Which files can I open?

You can open MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC and WebM audio. You can also open video files like MP4, MOV and WebM to take out the sound. Some rare files may open only in Chrome.

Which formats can I save as?

MP3 and WAV work on every modern browser. M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) and WebM (Opus) are also shown when your browser can make them. The tool only shows formats that really work on your device.

Why do I not see M4A or OGG in the list?

Every browser can make different formats. Safari on iPhone usually shows M4A. Chrome usually shows WebM. Firefox usually shows OGG and WebM. MP3 and WAV are always there.

Can I take the sound out of a video?

Yes. Choose an MP4, MOV or WebM video. The tool keeps only the sound and saves it as an audio file, for example MP3. The video part is not saved.

Which format gives the smallest file?

Opus (OGG or WebM) and M4A give the smallest files with good sound. MP3 is a little bigger but plays on every device. For the smallest MP3, choose Small quality and Mono.

Why did my WAV file get bigger?

WAV keeps the sound with no compression. So a WAV is almost always bigger than an MP3 or M4A file. Use WAV when you need the best quality, for example for editing. Use MP3 to save space.

How long does it take?

MP3 and WAV are fast. Most songs are ready in a few seconds. M4A, OGG and WebM are made in real time, so a 3 minute file takes about 3 minutes.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. Please keep the tab open until your file is ready.

Does it work without internet?

Your file is always handled on your device. The page and the MP3 helper need internet one time to load. After that, the work happens on your device, even if your internet is slow.

Is there a file size limit?

We do not set a limit. The limit is your device memory. Files up to about one hour work well on most phones. Longer files work better on a computer.

What is bitrate?

Bitrate is how much data is used for each second of sound. A higher bitrate means better sound and a bigger file. A lower bitrate means a smaller file. Our Quality menu picks a good bitrate for you.

Should I choose Mono or Stereo?

Choose Mono for voice, like podcasts, lessons and voice notes. It can make the file about half the size. Choose Stereo for music, so you keep the left and right sound.

How do I make a voice recording small enough to send?

Open your recording, choose MP3, choose Small quality and Mono, then press Start. A one hour talk becomes about 29 MB. This is good for email and chat apps.
